Big Walk save gone? The host has it, and it cannot be transferred
Progress in Big Walk lives on the host's machine only. If the world you played is missing, it is almost always because someone else is hosting — not because the save was deleted.
The official FAQ states that the host saves progress automatically and that continuing later requires the same host. There is no save transfer feature and none has been announced.
Do this first
The save is on the host's machine and nowhere else. If your world has vanished, check who opened the session — a different host means a different, empty save, and your original world is untouched on the original host's account. Get that person to host again and everything is where you left it. There is no way to move a save between players.
Is this your problem?
- You joined a session and everything is unsolved again
- The host is a different person from last time
- Your friend says their save is fine but yours looks empty
- The group wants to keep playing while the usual host is away
Who actually has your progress
The official FAQ is unambiguous: a Big Walk host is the keeper of the save game and all of your progress, and the game host saves it automatically.
Everyone else in the session is a guest inside that world. You are not carrying a copy of it home, which is why nothing appears on your own machine when you look for it.
So the question is never \"where did my save go\". It is \"who was hosting\". Those are different questions with very different answers.
Getting the world back
In almost every case the world is not lost at all, and the fix takes one message.
- Work out who hosted the session you remember. It is whoever pressed host, not whoever organised the group.
- Ask that person to host again and load that world. Everyone else joins as before.
- If several people have hosted at different times, each of them has a separate world. Have each check what is on their save before you assume anything is gone.
- Keep hosting with the same person from then on. Rotating hosts is the single most common way groups end up with three half-finished islands.
Why you cannot move the save
There is no transfer, export, or handover feature, and House House has not announced one. Steam Cloud backs up the host's own save to their own account; it does not share it with the group.
This has a practical consequence worth deciding early: the host is a scheduling choice, not a technical one. Pick whoever is most reliably free, not whoever has the best machine.
When the host quits mid-session
When the host stops the session, everyone else is disconnected. That is documented behaviour, not a crash, and no progress is lost by it — the host's save keeps whatever you had reached.
The group simply cannot continue that world until the host is back. Another player opening a session starts a fresh one instead.
Frequently asked
Did I lose my Big Walk progress?
Almost certainly not. It is on the host's machine. A session that looks empty is usually a different host's world, not a deleted save.
Can we transfer a Big Walk save to another player?
No. There is no transfer feature and none has been announced. The save stays with the host who created it.
Our host quit. Can we keep playing that world?
Not without them. Anyone else hosting opens a separate world. The original is intact but only reachable when that person hosts.
Does Steam Cloud back up our group's save?
It backs up the host's own save to the host's own account. It does not give the rest of the group access to it.
Why does progress reset every time we play?
A different person is hosting each session. Each host has their own world, so the group keeps starting new islands without realising it.
