Big Walk echo: why you hear yourself and voices doubled
Echo in Big Walk is a feedback loop, not a bug — someone in the session is on speakers. Here is how to find who, and why headphones are the only real fix.
The official FAQ documents this exact symptom. There is no patch coming because there is nothing to patch: one player's microphone is picking up the game audio coming out of their speakers.
Do this first
Someone in your group is playing on speakers instead of headphones. Their microphone picks up everyone else's voices from those speakers and sends them back into the session, which is why voices sound doubled and delayed. Get everyone onto headphones and the echo stops immediately. Nothing in the game settings fixes it, because the loop happens outside the game.
Is this your problem?
- You can hear your own voice coming back a moment later
- Voices sound doubled, layered, or slightly delayed
- It gets worse when one particular person is nearby
- It goes away when that person stops talking or leaves
Why the echo happens
The official FAQ names the cause directly: someone has a feedback loop going, which means their microphone is picking up voices from a speaker.
The chain is simple. Your voice reaches their computer, comes out of their speakers, gets picked up by their microphone, and is sent back to the whole session — a fraction of a second later. That delay is what you hear as echo rather than as a duplicate.
Because the loop closes outside the game, on their desk, no in-game setting can break it. This is also why it sounds worse the louder that person has their speakers, and why the rest of the group hears it too.
Finding who is causing it
The echo affects everyone, so it is easy to blame the wrong person. Work it out by elimination rather than by guessing.
- Have everyone stop talking. One person speaks a short sentence alone.
- Listen for the repeat. Whoever is on speakers will produce it every time, no matter who spoke.
- If the echo follows proximity — worse when you stand next to a specific player — that player is the one on speakers.
- Ask directly. \"Is anyone not wearing headphones\" resolves this faster than any test.
Fixing it
Headphones are the fix, and the official FAQ says the same: consider switching to headphones if you are not using them.
If someone genuinely cannot use headphones, lowering their speaker volume reduces how much the microphone picks up, but it does not remove the loop. Push-to-talk helps more, because their microphone is only open while they are deliberately speaking. Neither is as good as headphones.
When it is not echo
Two other things get called echo and are not. A voice that fades as you walk away is proximity chat working as intended. A voice that cuts out behind a wall or in a soundproof room is a puzzle mechanic, not a fault.
If a teammate is simply too faint rather than doubled, that is a different problem with a real fix — House House patched it in version 1.4.8.
Frequently asked
Why do I hear myself in Big Walk?
Because a player in your session is on speakers. Their microphone is picking up your voice from their speakers and sending it back. It is not a setting on your end.
Is there a setting to turn off echo?
No, and there cannot be. The loop happens in someone's room, between their speakers and their microphone, so the game has no way to break it. Headphones are the fix.
Why does the echo only happen sometimes?
It starts when the player on speakers joins or turns their volume up, and stops when they leave or go quiet. That is why it often seems to come and go for no reason.
Can push-to-talk stop the echo?
It reduces it. Their microphone is only live while they hold the key, so the loop is only open while they talk. Headphones still fix it properly.
Voices are doubled but nobody is on speakers. What now?
Check whether anyone has the game open twice, or is in the session on two devices. Two live microphones in one room produce the same symptom.
