Big Walk stuttering with a good framerate: what to try

Stutter that shows up while the counter still reads fine is a frame-pacing or streaming problem, not a raw performance one. No official patch exists — here is what the requirements tell you.

The only post-release patch, 1.4.8, was about voice volume. House House has published nothing about performance, so treat every settings tip below as a workaround rather than a fix.

Do this first

Lower Render Scale before you lower anything else — it is the setting with the largest effect and the least visible cost in a game this stylised. Check your RAM against the requirements next: Steam lists 12 GB as minimum and 16 GB as recommended, and stutter that arrives when new areas load is the classic symptom of being at the edge. Overlays are the third thing to rule out.

Is this your problem?

  • The framerate counter looks fine but the image hitches
  • It gets worse when you walk into a new area rather than staying constant
  • Forest and shadow-heavy areas are noticeably worse
  • It started in a longer session rather than immediately

Stutter and low framerate are different problems

A counter showing a healthy number while the image still hitches means frames are arriving unevenly rather than slowly. Chasing a higher average will not help, and can make it worse.

This distinction decides which settings are worth touching. Uneven delivery usually points at something outside the renderer: memory pressure, an overlay injecting itself, or new world data being loaded as you move.

What to change, in order

Change one thing at a time and walk the same stretch of ground after each one. Changing four settings at once tells you nothing about which one mattered.

  1. Render Scale first. It costs the least visually in a game with this art style and buys the most.
  2. Shadow quality second. Shadow-heavy forest is where players report the worst of it.
  3. Close overlays — Discord, GeForce Experience, capture software. Overlays hook the renderer and are a routine cause of hitching that no in-game setting will resolve.
  4. Cap the framerate to your display's refresh rate. A steady 40 reads far better than an average of 60 that swings.
  5. Check memory pressure. Steam lists 12 GB minimum and 16 GB recommended; if you are on 12 GB with a browser open, closing it is a real fix rather than a superstition.

What the official requirements actually say

Windows minimum is Windows 10 with an i7-7700K or Ryzen 5 1600X, 12 GB of RAM, and a GTX 750 Ti, Radeon R7 370, or Intel Arc A380. Recommended is Windows 11 with an i5-10600K or Ryzen 7 3700X, 16 GB, and a GTX 1070, RX 5600 XT, or Arc A750.

The Mac build asks for more memory than the Windows one: macOS 15 with an M1 minimum and 16 GB of RAM at both tiers, with M3 or newer recommended.

Minimum means the game runs, not that it runs smoothly in a twelve-player session. If you are at or below the minimum row, expect to spend the settings budget on stability rather than on fidelity.

Where this page stops

We have not benchmarked Big Walk ourselves, and the studio has published no performance guidance. Everything above is either read directly off the store page or is standard practice for isolating frame-pacing problems.

If you see a site quoting an exact percentage that a particular setting gains, treat it with suspicion. Nobody publishing those numbers is showing their test method.

Frequently asked

Is there a Big Walk performance patch?

Not as of 15 August 2026. The only post-release patch is 1.4.8, which addressed voice volume.

Why does it stutter when my FPS is fine?

Because the frames are uneven rather than few. That points at memory pressure, an overlay, or world data loading as you move, none of which show up in an average framerate.

Which setting should I lower first in Big Walk?

Render Scale. In a game with this art style it costs the least visually and returns the most, so it is the cheapest first experiment.

Is 12 GB of RAM enough for Big Walk?

It is the listed minimum, and 16 GB is recommended. At 12 GB, closing other applications before a long session is worth doing rather than optional.

Does the stutter get worse in bigger groups?

Players report the worst hitching when new areas stream in, which happens more in a group that spreads out. We have not measured this, so treat it as a community observation.
